15 October 2009

4 Alpha Trip:  
 

Yesterday 4 Alpha walked to Downingbury Farm in Pembury, just under 8 miles there and back!  Well done to them all.  Report and photos to follow soon.

 
Mentor Badges: Year 6 
 Mentor badges were presented to both the Duty and the Listening Mentors in Year 6. 
Netball v St. Johns' & Bidborough: Netball 'A' Team 
 On 14th October the 'A' Netball team went to Skinners Academy to play against Bidborough and St. Johns'.  They lost both matches, but are a good team and show great promise for the rest of the season. Report by Francesca. 
Orienteering:  
 On Tuesday of this week, 5 teams took part in the Tunbridge Wells Orienteering Festival.  Our team of George, Martin, Lottie and Jemma gained the fastest time and won a trophy, congratulations to them.  The team thanked Mrs Waller for taking and organising them.  Photos are on the home pages.  
Shell Award: 3A 
 Congratulations to 3A, who have won the Shell Award for the second time this term. 
St. James' Court - Harvest Gifts: Year 6 
 Following our Harvest Festival service last week, ten children from year 6 went with Mr Chandler and Mrs Simkins to St. James' Court to deliver the harvest gifts to the elderly residents.  The children spent time talking to the residents who were very pleased with the food parcels, many of them like to cook for themselves.  Particular praise to Euan F, who spoke to each of the residents.  The school has received a lovely 'thank you' card. 
08 October 2009
The Harvest Festival Service took place in the hall and was led by Rev. J. Stewart.  Pupils donated lots of tins and packets which will be distributed to St. James' Court and St. Augustines Soup Kitchen.
City of Canterbury Swimming Gala: Charlotte Yr 5 
 Congratulations to Charlotte, yr 5, who took part in the City of Canterbury Swimming Gala 2009/2010.  She swam in several heats and went on to win both the freestyle and butterfly in the 9-10yrs group.  She received a shield for each of the events. 
Conker Champion!: Euan A 
 Euan, 6 Alpha, took part in St. Philips Conker Championship, he played 20 people with his conker before becoming the winner.  He received a  small trophy which he keeps for a year. 
Football v Claremont: A & B Team 
 Both the A and B team went to Claremont and won their matches.  Reports on both matches by Dean and Josh. 
Instrumentalists: Year 6 
 

Congratulations to Lucy, Joe W, Euan A, Jessica M, Isobella and Lucas who accompanied the hymns in the service on the drums, flute, piano and saxophone.

 
Shell Award: 4 A 
 Congratulations to 4A, who won the Shell Award this week, they will receive some extra play time.

Displays in entrance hall: Year 3 
 Attention was drawn to the fabulous displays in the entrance hall, lots of hands from year 3.  Photos are on the home pages of the site. 
E-Safety: Yasmin, Paul, Sammi and Lewis year 5 
 

On Tuesday 29th September, Yasmin, Paul, Lewis and Sammi went to St. Johns' to take part in an internet safety day.  We played lots of games on the thinkyouknow.co.uk website.  Thank you Miss Davison for taking us.

In the coming weeks the whole school will become involved in e-safety with assemblies and information.

 
Football: A Team 
 The A team played their first match of the season against Paddock Wood earlier in the week, and won 2-0.  Full report by Joe T and Miller. 
Kent Schools Football: Joe T & Joe B yr 6 
 

Congratulations to both Joe & Joe from year 6 who were selected to take part in the Kent Schools Festival 2009/10.  Both are great footballers.

 
Saxophone: Lucas 6Alpha 
 Congratulations to Lucas, 6 Alpha, who has gained his Grade 2 Saxophone, with Merit, from Trinity College London. 
Shell Award: 6A 
 Congratulations to 6A, who are this weeks winners of the Shell Award, they gain some free time on the field. 
Snow in Calverley grounds!: Alex yr 5 and Josh S yr 6 
 Some pupils may have noticed that snow arrived early in Tunbridge Wells this week!!  Filming for a new advert for Morrisons took place in Calverley Grounds and the Pantiles.  Richard Hammond was in town and signed autographs for a few lucky people.  Josh was fortunate enough to have his jacket signed and Alex also got his autograph. 
Tri-Golf: Teams from yr 3 & 4 
 Children from year 3 & 4 took part in the Tunbridge Wells Tri-Golf Festival on 30.09.09.  The year 4 team were winners of the trophy.

Assembly was led by Elizabeth Lloyd from the Salvation Army.
Big Little Award: Amy and Zach 
 The Big Little Award is a very special award that is awarded at the end of every year.  It was presented to the school 6 years ago by the Little Family, who had several children in the school.  It is presented to children who at the end of year 5 are outstanding, with a positive attitude, happy and helpful.  This years winners are Amy and Zach, they both receive certificates and book tokens and have their names engraved on the shield.  Both children will be able to take the Shield home for part of the year.  Congratulations to them both. 
Cricket Festival Winners: St. James' Cricket Team 
 

Last week St. James' Cricket team completed matches begun last summer in the Tunbridge Wells Festival.  The team won both matches against, Sherwood Park and St. Matthews, resulting in them being the overall winners.

Hospice in the Weald: Alice, Jessica and Yasmin 
 Congratulations to Alice, Yasmin and Jessica from year 5 who all took part in the recent Charity Event organised by Hospice in the Weald, a 1k fun run. 
Judo: Megan, Georgia, Pip, Jake, Alanya, Esme, Imogen, Archie, Connie and Sam Yr 4 
 

On Tuesday 22nd September 10 children from year 4 took part in a Judo morning at Sherwood School.  They learnt some Judo moves and some of the language of the sport.  They were then treated to a display of Judo by members of the coaching team.

 
Shell Award: 5A & 5Alpha 
 Congratulations to both 5A and 5 Alpha, who were this weeks joint winners of the Shell Award and will each gain some free time. 
Swimming: Eleanor S 5A 
 Congratulations to Eleanor S, 5A who has gained her Bronze Swimming Award

Celebrations Assembly was led by Rachel Hayward, from the Baptist Church.
Crossing Lady!: Mrs Moriarty 
 Mrs Moriarty was presented with a lollipop, for her excellent lollipop skills this morning as she assisted children crossing the busy Sandrock Road while the crossing lights were out of action!!  Mr Chandler was her able assistant!  It is hoped the lights will be working by the time children go home. 
Pentathlon Shield:  
 The school was awarded the current Pentathlon Shield.  The same shield has been presented for the past 29 years and is now covered with smaller shields with the names of the winning school each year.  St. James' was awarded this shield because it has won it the most, an amazing 17 times!  A new shield will be presented to the winning school next summer. 
Shell Award: 3A 
 Congratulations to 3A the winners of the Shell Award for this week, they win some extra free time.

The first assembly of the new school year, was led by Rachel Hayward from the Baptist Church.
Listening Mentors: 6A 
 Congratulations to the following Listening Mentors, all from 6A.  They will work in pairs, one pair each day, on the playground to help other pupils.  Simon, Autumn, Sam J, Melissa, Lucy, Aidan, Ben K, Mungo, Leah and Jonny. 
Mentors: 6 Alpha 
 Congratulations to the following, who are the new Mentors from 6 Alpha, who assist with duties around the school;  Spencer, Miller, Bethany, Isobel, Sophie, Yasmin, Beth, Will C, Euan A, Joanna, James F, Harry and Mia. 
Shell Award: 3 Alpha 
 Congratulations to 3 Alpha, they are the first class to gain some extra free time this term. 
Taekwon-Do Federation: Sam W. 
 Sam W 4Alpha, successfully gained the rank of 9th Kup in Taekwon-Do, in the summer holidays.  Well done to Sam.

Assembly was led by the Parents Prayer Group. 

Music: Year 5 and Music Concert 
 Lots of musical events to celebrate this week. 

On Monday year 5 performed Adiemus at the Assembly Hall with TWGGS, Claremont and Bishops Down.  They rehersed during the day and performed to parents and friends in the evening, when they were joined by the Swing Band from St. James'.

On Tuesday, the end of year Music Concert took place with many children taking part, all were congratulated. 
 
Shell Award:  
 All classes were very close this week, so the Headteacher agreed that everyone could have some extra freetime after lunch on Friday this week. 
Swimming Award: Eleanor S, 4A 
 Congratulations to Eleanor who has gained her 100m Swimming Award. 
World Day:  
 Mr Chandler thanked Miss Davison for organising World Day which took place on Wednesday 8th July.  Children spent the day learning about many countries around the world, trying foods, crafts, languages, dance and games.  The day was a great success.

Assembly was led today by Mrs Lloyd from the Salvation Army.  There was plenty to celebrate!
British Land Chess Challenge 2009: Mary S 6A 
 Congratulations to Mary who won the British Land Chess Challenge this year.  She was presented with the award. 
Music Award: Anthony 4 Alpha 
 Congratulations to Anthony, who has gained his Grade 2 for violin. 
Netball Tournament for Cardiomiopathy: St. James' A and B teams 
 On Sunday 28th June, both the A and B team went to Tunbridge Wells High School to play a Netball Tournament for the Cardiomiopathy Charity.  The tournament was held to raise awareness of the disease, a cause very close to Langton Green Netball Club.  One of the coaches daughters died from the disease five years ago.  All the money raised from the whole day, including cake sales and a raffle.  Reports from both teams. 
Pentathalon:  
 On Wednesday 24th June children from year 5 & 6 went to Southborough to take part in the Tunbridge Wells Schools Pentathalon.  After a very close competition they came second, by just one point, to the winners, Southborough.  Full report and photo. 
Shell Award: 4A 
 Well done to 4A who won the Shell Award this week, and gain extra playtime. 
Sports Day:  
 Sports Day had a new format for the first time this year.  In the morning everyone took part in field events and then in the afternoon, following tradition, the track events took place.  A new Award for Sportsmanship was presented to Livingstone.  The new Award for Field Events was awarded to Scott and the winners of the Track Events were Wellington.  See full report and photos of the day on the Sports Day page. 
Swimming: Esme 6 Alpha 
 

Congratulations to Esme, who gained her 100m Swimming Award.

 
Tennis: Year 5 
 On June 16th 8 children from year 5 went to TWGGs to learn new techniques in tennis.  First we got into pairs and practised some of these techniques.  Next we went into small three a side games.  After that we played competative games, but there was no winner.  There were some prizes awarded at the end of the session and two of them were given to St. James'.  Coral got best effort for a girl and Harry got the most improved boy.  The prize was a set of tennis balls.   Thank you Mrs Waller for organising it and thank you to Mrs Simkins for driving us there and staying with us.

 Congratulations to 3A who won the Shell Award this week. 
Swimming: James F, Sam B, Harrison G and Chantelle W. 
 

Congratulations to James F yr 4, who gained his 50m Award, Sam B, yr 5, gained his 10m Award. Harrison and Chantelle both yr 4, gained their 200m Award.

Assembly was led by Hayley and  Kirkley from Fegans.
Kwik Cricket.: Years 5 & 6. 
 Pupils from years 5 & 6 took part in the Asda Kwik Cricket Tournament on 10th June.  The school took 2 teams, who had a great afternoon, despite the cold weather.  Full report. 
Shell Award: 5 Alpha 
 Congratulations to 3 alpha, 4A, 5A and 5 Alpha, all the classes were very close with the Shell Award, but the winners were 5 Alpha, who win extra playtime.  
Swimming:  
 Congratulations to; Luke, yr 4 who gained his 15m Swimming Award, Beth C, yr 5 who gained her 50m Award.  Josh M yr 5 gained his Bronze Speed Award.  Simon N yr 5 gained Silver Speed Award for Backstroke and Gold for Backstroke and Front Crawl, a great achievement. Charlotte yr 4 gained her Gold Speed Award for Butterfly, the first butterfly award gained in the school.

Assembly was led by Jenny and Hayley from Fegans.

Books From Waterstones: All pupils 
 Pupils were invited to bring into school a book they have read and enjoyed, which they no longer want at home, they complete a review card and donate the book to the school library.  In return they get a token which they can exchange for book, from a selection at Waterstones.  
Canoeing: Talia 6A 
 Talia received a certificate for canoeing 8.5miles down the River Wye at half term. 
ICT Room:  
 Pupils were informed of the changes being made to the current ICT room.  All computers in there have been replaced, as have the work stations.  There are now enough computers for children to have one each in the class.  It is hoped all the computers around the school and the ICT room, will be back in use at the beginning of next week.  See full report and photo's here. 
Race For Life: Megan 6 Alpha 
 Megan showed her medal for taking part in the sponsored Race for Life in Dunorlan Park recently.  She completed the 5k walk/run, and raised sponsor money for Cancer Relief. 
Shell Award: 6A 
 Congratulations to 6A for winning the Shell Award this week. 
Show Jumping: Talia 6A 
 Talia also received a rosette for second place in a competition at Pembury Riding Stables. 
Swimming Awards:  
 

Congratulations to Thomas L, who gained his 10m award and to Nathan T who gained his 15m award.
The following gained 50m awards, Taylor C, Ollie J, James F and Amir J.  Connie T gained 100m.  Matthew S, Jennie T, Jasmine M, Lucas M, Anthony S and Chimara B all gained 200m Awards.

Alice in yr 4 gained her Bronze Backstroke Award.  Max L, yr 5 gained his Silver Breaststroke Award.
Zach K, and Francesca S, both yr 5 gained Bronze Front Crawl Awards.  Euan A, yr 5 gained both his Bronze Frontcrawl Award and his Silver Backstroke Award.  Congratulations to them all.

Assembly was led by 5A, all about books.
Art Work: 6 Alpha 
 6 Alpha were congratulated on the fabulous art work on display in the main hall.  Art in Perspective.  Chris Burke, parent and artist helped pupils with the project.  Photo's are displayed on the home page.  
Chess: Mary 6A 
 Congratulations to Mary who played for Kent in the under 11, Team Championships at High Wycombe in the English Primary Schools' Chess Association, Inter-Association Championships at the weekend.  She received an additional award for being the best girl. 
Chess Tournament:  
 Congratulations to Mary, Anthony, Nathan and Lewis who took part in a tournament at Sidcup on Sunday.  The team ended half a point away from being second out of 15 teams.  They ended up 4th.  Mary was in second place and Anthony third place overall.  For report see Chess page. 
Football v Matfield and Brenchley: B & C Teams 
 St. James' B & C teams played against Matfield and Brenchley's A & B teams.  The B team won, but the C team lost. See reports on both matches. 
Kwik Cricket: St. James Girls Team 
 St. James' A & B teams took part in a tournement at Bells Yew Green, with mixed fortunes.  Click here to read full report. 
PFA Fete:  
 The fete at the weekend raised £3669, which will be split between the Junior and Infant School.  A BIG thank you to all those who helped make the event such a success and to the PFA for all their hard work.

School Council: Members of the Schools Council 
 

Ellie S, Emily S, Daniel A, Sam J, Miller G, Hannah J, Martha L, Neve H, Sam W and Oscar RW talked to the school about bullying and how it can affect pupils in school.  The Schools Council needs ideas from pupils on what to discuss next. Each class will have an opportunity to discuss ideas before the next meeting.

 
Shell Award: 6 Alpha 
 Congratulations to 6 Alpha, who won the award for the second time.   
Skinners Reflection Competition Winners: Jessica and Neve yr 4 and Annabelle Yr 5. 
 Congratulations to Jessica W, Neve H and Annabelle G who all won certificates and prizes for their winning entries in the competition.  Click here to see their entries. 
Swimming Gala:  
 

Congratulations to the swimming team who won the Tunbridge Wells Primary Schools Swimming Gala last night.  They won an impressive 18 races out of 27 and 7 trophies overall.  A great result and well done to the whole team and to Simon who coached them.  Team photo is on the home page and report on the Swimming page.

Chess: Mary 6A 
 Congratulations to Mary who took part in the English Primary Schools' Chess Association Inter Championships and won her match in the U11's 
Chess Match:  
 On Tuesday 28th April, 5 children went to St. John's to play a chess match.  One of our players was missing, so we all had to move up a rank.  Mrs Waller had to play and with some help from Mary, she drew her match.  Anthony won his match, but Ben, Lewis and Nathan lost.  Thank you Mrs Waller for organising the match and to Mrs Simkins for driving us there, we had a brilliant time. 
Netball Tournament: 'A' & 'B' Teams 
 Both the 'A' & 'B' teams took part in a tournament at Tunbridge Wells High School, with mixed fortunes.  Congratulations to the 'B' team who won the 'B' Team League.  Click here to see full reports and photo.

 Congratulations to 3 Alpha who won the Shell Award this week, by over 10 shells.  
Swimming Awards:  
 Congratulations to Somerton 3 alpha who gained 5m, Aidan 3A who gained 15m and William S 3 alpha who gained his 100m award. 
Tag Rugby Festival:

Assembly was led by Mr and Mrs Allen from the Church of Christ in Tunbridge Wells
Music Awards: Flute - Grade 1 
 Congratulations to Francesca S and Isabella 5A who have both gained grade 1 Flute Awards.  Francesca passed with merit and Isabella with distinction. 
Netball: 'B' Team 
 The team had two successful matches against Sherwood and St. Augustine's this week.  Click here to see full report. 
Rugby: Josh M 
 Josh M, 5 alpha, played for Tonbridge Juddians in a festival at Weston-Super-Mare and they won!  Josh was able to bring in the trophy and show the school.  Jonny and Ben also from year 5 went to the festival.

 Congratulations to 6 Alpha who won the Shell Award this week. 
Swimming:  
 Congratulations to the following for gaining swimming awards.
Sasha 5m, Maya 10m, Aiden 15m, Max, Ivor, Stephanie and Anais all gained 25m.  Abbie and Oscar gained 50m.  Mia, Aliyah, Zachary, Guy all gained 100m, all year 3.  Mary S and Matthew N 400m, both year 6.  Jessica H and Emily S, both year 6 gained bronze awards for backstroke.
Madeleine, 6 alpha gained bronze for backstroke, and silver for both front crawl and backstroke.
Louis K, 6A gained silver for front crawl and gold for backstroke.

The final Celebrations Assembly this term was led by Mr Chandler the Headteacher.  There was plenty to celebrate.

Art: Year 6A 
 Attention was drawn to all the fabulous artwork by 6A, on display in the entrance hall. 
Athletics Final at Ashford:  
 

Twelve pupils took part in the Kent Primary Schools County Final held at Ashford last Friday.  The team came 5th out of the 12 teams in the final.  Photo's can be seen on the home page and also with the report.

 
Chess: Mary S, Anthony S, Alex, Simon and Kyle. 
 On Tuesday 31st March the team played St. John's 'B' team at chess.  We won three and a half to one and a half.  Thank you to Mrs Waller for organising the event.  
Easter Service: Year 5 
 Mr Chandler thanked year 5 for the Easter Service which they put together and led in the church yesterday. 
Football Tournament: A & B Team 
 Both football teams took part in the local tournament last Saturday.  The boys had mixed fortunes.  Click link for full reports from both teams.  Many of the team are currently in year 5, so there are high hopes for next season. 
Kent Maths Challenge: Francesca D 
 Congratulations to Francesca who was awarded a Certificate of Achievement for her Maths Investigation. 
Music Festival: Choir 
 Congratulations to all who took part with such enthusiasm in the Music Festival on Monday at the Assembly Hall.  Mr Smith thanked the choir.  The choir sang Sun Arise and accompanied it with musical instruments. See full details in the report.
 
Netball: 'B' Team v Matfield & Brenchley 
 The 'B' team played a friendly match against St. Augustines while waiting for Matfield & Brenchley to arrive, and then played a match against them.  They won both matches, well done girls.  Click link for full report and team lists.  
School Council:  
 

The School Council meets every fortnight and it is the pupils that make the decisions and not the staff.  The pupils are currently considering how to tackle bullying.  Leaflets are being designed and a 'friendship stop' in the playground has been discussed.  Children will discuss in their classes and report back to the Council.

Swimming Gala at Gillingham: Jack, Max and Simon 
 Congratulations to Jack, Max and Simon for reaching the second round in the Kent Primary Schools Swimming Gala.  Click link for full report.

Chess Match: St. James v St. Peters 
 Earlier in the week 25 pupils took part in a closely contested chess match.  Everyone played really well. 
Football: St. James' 'A' & 'B' teams 
 The teams travelled to St. Matthews and had mixed fortunes.  The 'A' team lost 0-4, but the 'B' team won 5-0.  Click here to see the full report from the 'B' team. 
Hockey Tournament:  
 

St. James' A and B hockey teams went to a hockey tournament and had some good games.  Congratulations to the 'B' team who were runners up and received their own hockey sticks, presented by Aaron Davey from the TWSSP.  Click here to see full report and photo of the team.

 
Kent Primary Schools Swimming Gala: Max, Simon, Jack, Jonny and Rebekah.

 Mr Chandler thanked all the staff for what has been a very busy week for the school, with lots of sporting events going on and parent consultations after school.

Children were reminded to attend school in their own clothes on Friday, in return for an Easter Egg for the Easter Bingo which will take place in the evening.  The PFA will be on hand to sort the eggs in the morning.
Aida Opera: Jessica W, Charlotte and Ruby - year 4 
 Congratulations to Jessica, Charlotte and Ruby who took part in the Aida performance at the Assembly Hall earlier this week. They performed with a group of dancers. 
Maths Challenge: Mary and Lauren 6A 
 Congratulations to Lauren who received a certificate for competing in the final of the Junior Maths Challenge and to Mary who received a silver certificate and medal. 
Netball: St. James' 'B' Team 
 The 'B' team went to TWHS to play 2 matches, against Speldhurst and St. Peters.  For full report click on the link. 
Shell Award: 3A 
 Congratulations to 3A to are the first winners of the new Shell Award.

12 March 2009
Assembly was led today by Jennie from Fegans.  The school guitar group played to the school for the first time.  Elliot P, Jacob D and Jack from year 6 joined with Josh M and Oscar from year 5 to play Got the Blues.  Then Leah yr 5 and Ruby yr 4 played Chant.
Children were reminded to wear own clothes, preferebly red, in exchange for a donation to Comic Relief tomorrow.  Various activities will take place, with the main event - St. James' Got Talent final in the afternoon.
Chess Federation: Anthony 4alpha. 
 Congratulations to Anthony who has successfully completed the syllabus and exam with the British Chess Federation, passing with distinction. 
Chess Tournament: Mary S, Anthony S, Ben V, Nathan G and Lewis N, 
 The Chess Team went to Holmewood House to play 6 matches and won 4 matches, drew 1 and lost 1.  They had a great time and enjoyed a fantastic tea at the end of the matches.

 Kyle and Mary both took part in a Chess Tournament on 4th March, with mixed fortunes.   
Netball: 'A' Team

New 'Shell' Awards:  
 Mr Chandler announced details of the new 'Shell Award'. Tokens will be given to children who are thoughtful, courteous and well mannered around the school.  Children should hand their 'Shell' tokens to their class teacher and each Thursday the class with the most tokens will win the 'Shell Award'.  As to the nature of the award, this will then be decided by the class teacher with the class. 
Swimming Awards:  
 Congratulations to Megan R-S, yr 3 who gained 10m Award.  Oliver C, yr 3 who gained his 25m Award.
Mia and Joe W, both 5Alpha, gained 200m Awards. 400m Awards went to Lottie 4A, Yasmine 4A, Martha 4A and Torin 4Alpha.  Bronze Speed Award for front crawl was awarded to Zoe 6Alpha.

Basketball Tournament: Yr 5 & 6 children 
 On Wednesday pupils took part in a basketball tournament at Bennett Memorial.  St. James had an 'A' and 'B' team.  The 'A' team played 5 games, winning 2, drawing 2 and lost out in 1.  The 'B' team also played 5 games and won 4 and drew 1.  This put them into the final against St. Augustines 'A' team, but lost in the final throw of the game.  Everyone had a great time. Click here to see full report. 
Speedstacking Demonstration: at Camden Centre TW. 
 Pupils were selected to represent the school at a Speedstacking demonstration at the Camden Centre on 3rd March.  They demonstrated their skills to adults and parents and all had a really good afternoon.  Click link to see full report.

 Congratulations to Charlotte who has gained her Gold Speed Award for front crawl and backstroke and Silver Speed Award for her breaststroke.

 Tunbridge Wells School Sports Partnership held a Swimming Camp in half term.  Jarrod gained Water Skills Level 2, and enjoyed his week of swimming.

Karen Maier from the High Weald Energy Story Project joined the assembly, to talk about being High Weald Heroes.  The school were shown lots of slides of the area and talked about the environment.  The school was presented with a High Weald Hero Plaque and the children were encouraged to continue to take five actions: explore; find out about; be proud of; take care of and enjoy.  A photo of the plaque is on the home page.

 Mary S and Lauren M, from year 6 took part in the tests this week, which have now been sent off to be marked.

Royal School of Music: Ellie 6 Alpha 
 Ellie gained her grade 1 award in violin at Foundation Level. 
The Shell - school magazine: Lillie and Louis K. 6 Alpha 
 Lillie and Louis have completed the second edition of the school magazine, The Shell.  Copies will be delivered to all classes. 
TW Sports Partnership - Indoor Athletics Festival:  
  Last week it was reported the team had taken part and thought they had done very well, but all the events were timed and they were awaiting the result. Aaron Davey from the TW Sports Partnership attended assembly to announce the result.  The team had won, by an impressive 55 points and were presented with the trophy.  They now travel to Ashford at the end of March to take part in the Kent Festival, against other schools from all over Kent. Chess: Mary 6A 
 Mary recently took part in an Under 11 tournament held in Orpington.  She gained a certificate for winning five of the six matches she played. 
Display in the main hall: Year 3 
 Year 3 were congratulated on the fantastic paintings now on display in the main hall and outside year 3.  The art is titled 'Thinking Big' photo's will be added to the home page.  
Kent Amateur Gymnastics Association: Jessica 3A 
 Jessica took part in a local competition, and was surprised and delighted to be presented with a gold medal. 
Primary Indoor Athletics:  
 

A team of six boys and six girls, took part in twelve events at Tunbridge Wells High School on Wednesday 28th January.  Each member of the team took part in three events.  Mrs Waller reported that the team did very well in all events.  The overall result, which was based on times, will be announced in the next few days.  Team members; Joe T, Miller, Mungo, Toby R, Toby W, Spencer, Alice W, Megan T, Isobel F, Sophie H, Sophie R and Alice R all from years 5 & 6.

 St. James' 'B' team played two matches on 21st January, against Claremont and St. Paul's, they were good matches in the cold and St. James' won them both.  See link to full report. 
Recorders: Top Recorder Group 
 The group were thanked for accompanying the hymn in assembly. 
School Council Presentation: Emily S and Martha L 
 Last year, pupils raised £230.  Each class did its own event so we could buy some playground equipment.  Pupils were asked what they wanted and school council members demonstrated the equipment.
8 space hoppers - one for each class. 2 sets of ski's, A soft frisbee for every class, 5 ball and net sets, 8 kick 'n' flick sets, 2 lvery, very, long skipping ropes and lastly the colourful scarves.  Please look after them, otherwise all the money raised will be for nothing.  On a happier note, everything will be out on the playground as soon as possible, so most importantly have fun.  Report by Emily and Martha

New Age Curling: Year 3 & 4 pupils 
 

Eight children from years 3 & 4 took part in the New Age Curling Festival at Tunbridge Wells High School.  They were great ambassadors for the school.  Team B scored more points than any other team in the first round, however there were two leagues and in the final they lost out to Southborough.  See link to full report.

Pupils in year 6 took part in the National Primary Maths Challenge in November.  Mary and Lauren did so well they have both been invited to take part in the next stage to be held in February - congratulations to them.  Phoebe S, 6alpha, also came very close to taking part in the next stage and was also congratulated.

The last assembly of the term was led by the Headteacher.  It began with a hymn, Once In Royal David's City, with the first verse being sung by Matilda from 6 Alpha.  The rest of the school joined in for the rest of the hymn.
Christmas Carol Service:  
 Mr Chandler thanked all the children who took part in the service yesterday, in particular those who sang solo or in small groups; Phoebe, Matilda, Francesca, Lauren and Zoe.  To the musicians; Olivia, Tom and Talia.  The flute group; Eleanor, Chimara, Mollie, Lucy, Francesca and Isabella.  The top recorder group; Mary, Rebekah, Autumn, Lauren, Amy, Joanna, Isabella, Lucy, Olivia, Alice, Matilda, Maddy and Emily. 
Jingle Bells: Middle Recorder Group 
 Children from year 4 in the middle recorder group played Jingle Bells, the school then joined in and sang the song accompanied by the recorders.

 10m Awards were presented to; William, Lauren, Ivor, Anais, Stephanie and Florrie. All from year 3.
25m Awards; Oscar, Zoe and Abi all in year 3.

Speedstacking Festival:  
 4 Teams from St. James' took part in a tournament at St. John's on 10th December.   In the relay events the final was St. James Team 1 against St. James' Team 4.  Team 4 won the event.  See photo and report.

Able Writers: Year 6alpha 
 Toby R, Louis A, Matilda and Annabelle took part.
On Wednesday 26th November four children from 6alpha took part in an Able Writers Course along with children from other schools with author Brian Moses.  On the course we did various activities such as writing a love poem, writing power poems and others.  With the power poem we had to make up powerful names and write about amazing things we know.  Finally Brain Moses performed some of his pieces of work, like the Snake Hotel.  Thank you Mr Smith for picking us to go on this fantastic course.
 
Courtesy Award: Louis A 
 Louis A - 6alpha received a Courtesy Award for being very helpful on the playground, several members of staff nominated him for this award. 
Decorated Jars for the Christmas Fair: Phoebe, Katy, Aidan and Emily 
 Phoebe S yr 6, Emily S yr 5, Katy T yr 4 and Aidan C yr 3 were awarded their prizes for winning the decorated jar competition.

Fund raising for Charity: Hospice in the Weald 
 The pupils were read a letter from the Hospice in the Weald, thanking them for the donation of funds raised from the Sponsored Walk in the summer.

6A led the assembly with a Victorian Theme.  Pupils shared their discoveries about Victorians.  Inspiring Victorians such as Dickens, Dr Barnados and Florence Nightingale, amazing inventions from Alexander Graham Bell and Eddison, child labour, education and ended by singing songs from the music halls.

 Pupils from Skinners School attended assembly to announce the winners of the last competition, 'What matters most is how you see yourself,' they also read out the pieces of writing.  Winners received certificates and book tokens. See our best entries.

A new competition was launched with the title 'What does this picture mean to me' - see link to picture.
 
Skipping Workshop: Pupils from year 5 
 'Skipping is cool'.  On Wednesday 19th November six pupils from each class in year 5 were chosen to take part in skipping activities.  We were taught lots of new things such as 'double dutch', 'pretzel' which was very hard since you had to place your arn under your leg and then turn the rope, and 'American skipping'.  We used speed ropes which spin faster and if you get hit by them, they hurt alot.  Jazzy and I enjoyed the American Skipping best, because we had two ropes and this was a challenge.

Chess: St. James' v Bishops Down 
 On 11.11.08 St.James' Chess Club played Bishops Down Chess Club.  There were 15 boards.  We won 8 games, we drew 3, and lost 4 games.  St. James' won nine and a half points and Bishops Down got five and a half points.  Several of the games ended very quickly, however, other games took the whole time of 25 minutes.  We all enjoyed ourselves.  Thank you  Mrs Waller for organising this very enjoyable match.

 Mary has gained her Bronze Award in Horse Riding.  She spent time riding and looking after the horse over 5 days. 
Netball: St. James' 'A' v Langton Green 'A' 
 On 11.11.08, St. James' A team played against Langton Green A team.  They were extremely good and scored 4 amazing goals in the first quarter.  We pulled through and scored 3 shots making the score 4-3 to them.  In the third quarter we received bad news - the sun was going down rapidly and we had to cancel the last quarter.  Unfortunately they scored a few goals leaving the score 7-3 to Langton.  Thank you Mrs Mesher for helping and supporting us all the way throughout the match and thank you to Mrs Waller for organising it.

Netball: St. James' 'B' v Langton Green 'B' 
 On Tuesday 11.11.08 St. James' B team played away against Langton Green 'B' team.  Luckily for us they were all year 5, so we had more experience and we scored 6 goals in the first quarter.  The game became much harder, but we pulled through and scored another 5 goals, making the score 11-0.  The 'A' and 'B' team shooters swapped over and so the 'B' team had Maddy, who took her time and successfully scored, making the score 12.0. Thank you Mrs Mesher for organising the match and to  Mrs Simkins and Mrs Gilman for taking us to Langton.

Cross Country Festival: Toby R, Daniel, Alice, Oliver H, James N, Madeleine, Ben and Joel. 
 On 5th November 8 children took part in the Tunbridge Wells Cross Country Festival.  The year 3 & 4 team won their race - a kilo metre, with Joel coming second overall.  The year 5 & 6 team also won their race - a mile, with Toby R winning the race overall.

Netball v St. Matthews 'B': St. James' 'B' 
 

On Wednesday 5th November St. James' B team went to St. Matthews to play a match.  We started off with a good lead through brilliant passing.  They tried hard, but with our great goal keeper and defences, Emily and Eloise they could not score.  The final score was 13-1 to us. Thank you Mrs Mesher for a very enjoyable match.

The school welcomed Mr Green from the Royal British Legion, who has visited the school for many years to talk to the children about the Poppy Appeal.  This year is the 90th anniversary of the end of World War 1.
Balloon Race: PFA 
 

Friday 24th October sees the launch of the new PFA, which combines both the infant and junior schools.  To celebrate the launch, pupils will be able to release balloons before lunch, with their name on, to see which balloon travels the furthest.  All the balloons and tags are bio-degradable and safe to the environment.  Children from the infant and junior school will take part.  The PFA will also hand over to both the infant and the junior school a large cheque, which the junior school plans to use to furnish the new Science room.  The prize for the balloon which travels the furthest is a Family Cinema Ticket.

Logo Competition: Parents and Friends Association 
 

Children were reminded that the closing date for entries to design a new logo for the PFA closes on Friday 24th October at break time.  The winning design will become the new logo for the combined Infant & Junior School PFA.

 
Outdoor Adventure Activities: Toby R, Olivia, Alice, Spencer, Joanna, Tommy, Omar and Emily. 
 On 22nd October, children from years 4,5&6 went to Southfields for an orienteering festival.  We were split into four groups, St. Marks, St. James', St. Matthews and another.  We played four games finding numbers, cities, maps and signs.  We were timed and had fifteen minutes to do each section and got points for completing the task and if we finished in less than fifteen minutes we got extra points.  We did team building games with a paracute before the scores were reveiled.  St. Marks won.  Thank you to Mrs Waller for organising us and to the parents who supported us.  
Tennis tournament: Oscar and Harry 3A 
 Recently took part in a tennis tournament at Tunbridge Wells Tennis Club.  Harry won his match in two sets and received a medal, which he showed to the school.

Donated by the Little Family when their children left the school, this shield is awarded to two children in year 5 at the end of each year.  Unfortunately this was unable to take place in July this year.  The award is for consitantly showing outstanding levels of thoughtfulness, kindness and consideration during the year.  The award was presented by the Headteacher to Matthew, currently in 6α and Jessica T, currently in 6A.  Both children were awarded certificates, book tokens and a book plate to go in their new book and will share the shield over the year. Go Carting: Eloise and Ellie 5α 
 Recently took part in various challenges locally, and won a trophy. 
Netball 'A' team: Year 6 girls 
 The team took part in two matches at the High School on 15.10.08.  The first match was against Southborough, the score was 5-4 to them. The second match was against St Marks the girls won 7-0 Both matches were very good and the girls had a great time.  Thank you Mrs Mesher and Mrs Waller for two very enjoyable matches.
Team; Sasha, Suzan, Maddy, Nadine, Eloise, Alice, Lauren and Megan.  Suzan was named player of the match.
 
PFA Competition:  
 The Parents and Friends Association has joined with the infant school and they would like a logo.  Children were asked to design a small logo for the PFA which could be used on letters and badges.  The best entries from both the infant and junior school will be considered and a prize awarded to the winning design, which will appear on letters and information.
The closing date for entries is Friday 24th October.  The box for entries is situated outside year 5 and entries can be sent via email.

The Harvest Service was led by the Rev. Jim Stewart, with the top recorder group accompanying the hymns.  Pupils donated tinned goods which will be distributed to St. James' Court and the Soup Bowl.
Football: St. James' A team 
 The A team played their first match of the season on Wednesday 9th October, at home, against Paddock Wood.  After a close and exciting match Paddock Wood won 4-3.  Full report can be found in the Sports and Clubs section. 
Planter Competition: Amy - year 4 
 Lots of entries to name the new planters were received. Dave who designed and makes them chose the winning name - "Tornado Planter", suggested by Amy in 4α who won a mini version of the ones around the school. More details and photos on the competition page.
 
Rugby U10's Tournament: Josh - 5α 
 Josh who plays for Tunbridge Juddians U10's played in a tournament at the weekend, and reached the final.  The score at the end of the match was 0-0 so the cup will be shared between Tunbridge Juddians and Westcombe Park.

Year 3 were thanked for the superb art work which has been put on display in the entrance hall and also the main hall. 

 
Horse Jumping: Talia 6A 
 Congratulations to Talia took part in a show jumping competition in Pembury recently, where she came second and won a rosette. 
Mascalls Fun Run 2k: Talia 6A 
 Talia completed the fun run to raise funds for Hospice in the Weald and got a medal for finishing first running with her dog. 
Tri-Golf: Year 3 & 4 
 Children from years 3 & 4 took part in a golf tournament held at Tunbridge Wells Golf Course finishing 3rd overall.
Congratulations to Sam in 3α who won the award for best golfer, and received a bag of goodies.

Chess: Mary 6A 
 Mary took part in a Chess Tournement in Crowborough and played 6 games, winning 3, drew 2 and lost 1.  She won a cup for the most points gained.

 Tom, 6 alpha and Max 6A both received awards for being polite and thoughtful. 
Half Marathon: Miss Church 
 Miss Church took part in a Charity half marathon at Windsor on Sunday.  She raised funds for a family she met in Uganda 9 years ago.  The money is for them to build their own house and live together as a family. 
Horse Riding: Anthony 4 Alpha 
 Anthony gained his Grade 3, he had to carry out basic riding skills and canter. 
Hospice in the Weald Charity Run: Tommy 5alpha & Jessica 4alpha 
 

Parents and children took part in the Charity Run last weekend to raise funds for Hospice in the Weald.  Parents ran 10k, while children ran 1k.  Tommy and Jessica took part.

 
Swimming: Otto, Molly, Chloe, Nathan and Luca 
 Otto, 4A, Molly, Chloe, Nathan and Luca all gained their 25m badges in swimming.

Football Club: years 5 & 6 
 Pupils were reminded that football club would commence after school on Thursdays and trails for teams would take place shortly. 
Help The Hero's Charity Calendar: Rhys, 6α 
 Rhys has been helping his parents who have just completed a calendar for the charity 'Help The Hero's', a charity for service families.  His mum, with the help of a local photographer, started to take photo's in May all over Kent.  Local companies have sponsored pages, and a BBQ was held and raised £300.  In August the artwork went to the printer. The calendar was launched on September 6th in Pembury with another BBQ, band and kids bar and raised £4000 for the charity. The calendar is of motorbikes.

Congratulations to the new Duty Mentors, who were introduced to the school; Sam, Carl, Annabelle, Lillie, Esmé, Tristan, Louis A, Louis K, Jacob, Eleanor, Jessica H, Suzanne, Kevin-Lee, Nadine and Amy.  

 
Listening Mentors: 6A 
 Congratulations to the newly appointed listening mentors.  Two mentors will be available in the playground, at break and lunch each day for children to talk to.  The mentors; Harry, Alice, Mary, Talia, Jacob C, Emmerson, Phoebe, Tiernan, Natasha and Emily, were introduced to the school. 
My Fair Launderette: Katy and Olivia 4alpha. 
 During the summer holidays at Hillview in Tonbridge children took part in a Performing Arts Summer School to produce theatre and dance shows.  Katy & Olivia took part in My Fair Launderette, an alternative version of My Fair Lady.  An article and picture was published in the Courier on 15th August.

The final celebration assembly for the year took place in the morning and started with the hymn 'Shalom', which was chosen as the favourite of 6A.  At the end of the service the school sang 'One More Step', chosen by 6 Alpha.

Goodbye to some staff: Mrs Cottrell, Mrs Hemsley and Mrs Benson 
 Mrs Cottrell, a Teaching Assistant, is leaving after two years. Pupils presented her with a card and gift.

Mrs Hemsley is going on Maternity Leave with her first child.  Pupils presented her with a card and gifts for her and the baby.

Mrs Benson, a Teaching Assistant who is getting married and will return as Mrs Harris in September.  Pupils presented her with a card and wedding gift.
 
Leavers Service: Year 6 
 The Headteacher thanked the pupils for a great service yesterday, in particular all the children who read their memories of their time at St. James' and those who did readings and prayers. He also thanked all those who played individual instruments beautifully, the top recorder group, the choir and last but by no means least,  Mr Smith who organised the service. 
Music Awards: Year 6 
 Music Awards were gained by all members of the choir, who have given up a lunchtime each week to practice; Lucy, Charlotte, Elena, Georgia, Caitlin, Judy, Jemimah, Francesca, Rowan, Sofia, Elenor, Louise, Esther, Alisha, Grace, Alice, Roxanne, Ellie, Lauren, Lydia, Zoe, Georgia, Lauren, Lily, Jessica and James.

Individual Awards to the following, who gave up additional lunchtimes, for Orchestra; Georgia, Harry, Christopher, James, Joshua, Ralph, George, Jacob and Cameron.  For Recorders; Siobhan, Claire, James and Esther.  The following received awards for both Orchestra and Recorders; Eleanor, Lydia and Zoe.

Swimming: Charlotte - year 3 
 Charlotte took part in a Monson Speed Gala and won a cup as she was the most improved over 100m. 
Swimming Speed Awards: Georgia yr 6 
 Georgia, 6alpha recently gained three gold speed awards, for freestyle, breaststroke and backstroke. 
Thank You: Mr Chandler 
 Mr Smith (Deputy Headteacher) thanked Mr Chandler for all his hard work over the past year and for guiding the school to its recent 'outstanding' Ofsted report.  He received a big round of applause from all the staff and pupils.

Cake Sale: Year 3 
 Children in year 3 donated cakes which were sold at playtime and raised just under £100. for charity. 
Chess: Harry and Chris 
 Both took part in the Giga Finals which were held at Wellington College in Surrey on 13/07/08. They both played 6 matches, with mixed results. Congratulations to them both for reaching the finals. 
Crazy Hat Day: Year 6 
 Today year 6, including staff, wore crazy hats and footwear to raise money for charity. Click here for a few pictures.  
Fencing: Daniel year 5 
 Gained his Proficiency Award. 
Mentors: Year 6 
 All the Mentors were given certificates and congratulated. 
National Maths Competitions: Harry, Year 6 
 Harry entered the Junior Mathematical Challenge and gained full marks and a gold certificate.

He also took part in the Intermediate Maths Olympiad for children in year 9 and under and gained 38 out of 60 marks and received a bronze medal and a book for getting such a high score. Congratulations to a brilliant mathematician
 
Panto: Year 6 
 

The Headteacher congratulated year 6 on their 'stunning show' and commented that parents who came to see the panto were 'excited and delighted'. All the characters, prop makers, scene changers, people in charge of music and words received a final round of applause. The school also thanked the staff, Mr Smith, Miss Church, Mrs Gilman and Mrs Woolgar.

Pentathalon:  
 

Certificates were given out to all those who took part in the recent Pentathlon, and came third overall.

  • Year 6, Emma, Victoria, Robbie, Grace, Sarah, Georgia, Tom P, Chris C, Josh L, Sam, Natalie and Charlotte.
  • Year 5, Suzan, Megan, Jodie, Nadine, Toby W, Alice, Toby R, Tristan, Daniel, Jacob C, Oliver H and Olivia.

Questionnaire Reponse: 5 α 
 Earlier in the year the Governors had sent out questionnaires to all the children and agreed the class who returned the most completed forms would win a prize. 5 α returned the most forms and were pleased to receive an extra playtime on the field on their own. 
Roman Numerals Maths Competition: Claire year 6 
 Claire received a certificate for her outstanding presentation and work. 
Swimming Certificates:  
 
  • Antonino and Charlotte, both received certificates for Water Confidence.
  • Luke and Thomas gained their 5m badges.
  • Jasmine, Mia and Lewis all gained 10m badges.
 
Swimming Gala: Georgia, year 6 
 

Recently took part in a gala in Sevenoaks and won the 25m freestyle and breaststroke, came second in the 25m backstroke and third in the 25m butterfly.

 
Tennis Masterclass: Sam, Thomas, Talia and Eleanor. 
 

On the 16th July children from year 5 went to TWGGS to have a Tennis Master Class, with Barnaby, the under 14 Kent Tennis Champion, also his coach Rafael who was number 30 in the world.

First we did a warm up and then we played a match, afterwards we watched Barnaby and Rafael have a match.

Sam won the Most Motivated Player Award.

Assembly was led by Mr Threshie, from the Baptist Church.

Mrs Tucker talked to children about the planned PFA Beer, band and bbq on Saturday 19th July, with camping overnight on the field. Also about the end of year Disco to be held next Friday the 18th July.
Chess Club: Max, Mary, Chris, Jacob, Harry and James 
 

Last Sunday 6th July our 'A' team played in the Kent Junior Chess League Finals at Amhurst School, Sevenoaks and played 5 matches. Each match lasted 1hour and 10 minutes - a long time!!
Everyone played brilliantly and supported each other well. Unfortunately we didn't win this year!
Well done to the team of Harry, Chris, Jacob and James from yr 6 and Max and Mary in yr 5.

Skinners school attended assembly to announce the winners of the recent 'Reflections' competition.

Year 4 wore pyjama's and had 'wacky hair' to raise money for charity.

 Jacob became a dinosaur ambassador by helping to set up an exhibition at the local museum

Skinners Reflections competition winners: 6 entries from year 5 
 

Tiernan, Daniel, Nathan, Olivia, Natasha and Jodie wrote poems and short stories inspired by the picture of dolphins with a trainer.

Celebrations assembly was led this morning by some children from 6α. They reported on the year 6 journey to the Isle of Wight, last week. The school were told of the activities, challenges and achievements and we even had 4 of the boys sing their 'tidy chalet' song!!

The children then showed a Powerpoint presentation of their time away, with photos and captions, set to music, which was enjoyed by all. Years 3, 4 and 5 are all looking forward to their chance to go to the Isle of Wight.

Mr Smith thanked the staff who had gone with him on the trip, Miss Church, Mrs Holdstock, Mrs Gilman and Mrs Woolgar, and the 3 brave dads who also had groups.

Our team took part in a variety of events, standing throw, cricket ball throw, shuttle run, hop, step and jump and long jump. The team came third overall.

The team consisted of children from year 5 and year 6.

The Assembly was led by Kirklea from Fegans.

The children admired the banner which the 615 club have made and which is displayed in the main hall.

Billy Bonker Competition: Phoebe 5α 
 The Billy Bonker Competition was set by author Anthony Joyce. The winner was Phoebe who the author decided had written the most exciting start to a story. 
Concert: Georgiana 6α 
 Georgia showed a book, The Mousehole Cat, by Antonia Barber and Nicola Bayley which she got at the Royal Festival Hall after a concert, her copy was signed by the author Nicola Bayley.  
Environment Competition: Phoebe and Madeline 5α 
 The winners of the Environment Competition to name the chicken were Phoebe and Madeline for their name 'Scrambled Egg' 
Kwik Cricket Tournament 11th June: A and B Teams 
 

On 11th June, St. James’ A and B teams set off to the Neville Cricket ground to take part in the annual Kwik Cricket Festival.
